Professore di giornalismo al NYU’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute, i suoi interessi sono rivolti alla fisica e alla matematica. È autore di sei libri, tra i quali Zero: The Biography of a Dangerous Idea (Penguin Books, 2000) (Zero. La storia di un’idea pericolosa, Bollati Boringhieri, 2013) e Virtual Unreality: Just Because the Internet Told You So, How Do You Know It’s True? (Viking, 2014) (Le menzogne del web. Il lato sbagliato dell’informazione, Bollati Boringhieri, 2015).

Virtual Unreality: The Web, Big Data, Information, and Truth*
For better and for worse, we are now almost as dependent upon our digital interconnections for gathering information about our environment as we are upon our eyes and our ears. Our understanding of the world around us is increasingly defined by machines. In this talk, Seife will discuss how this change not only allows us to gather and absorb more information than ever before, but it also gives the people who design and control those machines the power to manipulate our perceptions and our behavior — our very reality.

Irrealtà virtuale: la Rete, i Big Data, informazione e verità
Nel bene e nel male, ormai facciamo affidamento sulle risorse digitali per raccogliere informazioni sull’ambiente e sul contesto in cui ci muoviamo quasi fossero un prolungamento fisico di occhi e orecchie. La nostra comprensione del mondo è quindi sempre più definita dalle macchine. Nella sua lectio, Seife mostrerà come questo cambiamento ci permetta da un lato di raccogliere e assorbire molte più informazioni rispetto al passato, e dall’altro consente a chi realizza e controlla le macchine di manipolare le nostre percezioni, il nostro comportamento e la nostra stessa realtà.
